HONORS ENGLISH 3-4 APPLICATION PROCESS

Honors English 3-4 Criteria
Honors English 3-4 is a more literature-intensive course than standard English 3-4. It is expected that students will be capable independent-readers who are willing to engage with different texts in meaningful ways. Students should be comfortable reading for comprehension on their own and outside of class, as class work will focus on analysis, interpretation, and synthesis. Additionally, students interested in Honors English 3-4 should be competent writers, able to express themselves clearly and able to support their ideas with specific evidence from different sources.

Application Process
Read beyond required class text
Students interested in applying for Honors English 3-4 need to read a book from the list below that they have not read as a part of their regular English class curriculum. As you read the book, things you should consider are: What are the themes the author develops? How does the author develop those themes?  What does your book have in common with other books that you’ve read?  How do characters inter-relate?  How can these stories impact/change your perspective? Students are encouraged to take notes as they read.

·         On-demand reading and writing opportunity

During the week of April 28th, there will be at least two after-school opportunities for applicants to sit for an on-demand writing sample on a topic related to the book that they read. For this opportunity, students will be provided with one or more additional articles related to the topic of the book they chose. Students will read and mark those articles. Then, they will write an essay on a topic that asks them to develop their ideas by making reference to both the book they read and the article(s) they read. Students will have approximately 2 hours to complete this task.

·         Selection

Student essays will be read and evaluated by members of the GHS English Department. Those teachers will identify students who demonstrate skills consistent with the ones needed to be successful in Honors English 3-4. Then, all applicants will be informed of their results.

Book Options:

Children of the River by Linda Crew

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Night by Elie Wiesel

All of these titles can be found in the GHS book room and will be available for check out.
